As well as fully completing the BC Elementary School Curriculum, our intermediate students have numerous opportunities to develop their critical thinking, independent learning and leadership skills. Our students are encouraged to achieve their full academic potential and grade acceleration for core subjects is offered where appropriate.
We encourage all of our students to express their ideas and gain confidence. We highlight the importance of kindness, sharing, good manners and listening to others. We offer many unique programs of study which develop a depth and breadth of understanding for each child. For example, our intermediate students study Shakespeare and learn formal debating and academic essay-writing. Their Science studies include a variety of projects such as converting a go-kart to run on electricity.
The children in the intermediate grades have most of their lessons with their classroom teacher, but they have specialist teachers for subjects such as French, Art and Music, each week. There is supervised physical activity every day.
Intermediate students participate fully in the Choice Challenge, Passions Projects and Experiential Week programs which offer opportunities for learning in depth through practical workshops and field trips. They also have the opportunity to participate in the Student Council which meets two to three times per month. Through the Student Council, the students engage in service-learning projects to support the Obakki Kids for Clean Water Foundation. Students also participate in charitable fund-raising projects such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart.
Communication with home is very important for all students at Choice. We have an ‘open door’ policy and encourage parents/guardians to communicate regularly with the school.
