Strengths and Struggles: A Collaborative Journey into the Learning Experiences of Complex Students

This interactive seminar invites participants on an experiential journey into the learning lives of students with complex and interconnected learning differences. Through hands-on activities, participants will gain insight into how students process information, manage attention, and experience school daily. The session emphasizes understanding both strengths and struggles and includes practical teaching and parenting strategies to better support complex learners in inclusive learning environments.

Dr. Robert Williamson is an Associate Professor of Inclusive Education at Simon Fraser University. His work is grounded in frontline experience as both a classroom teacher and a father of complex children. Throughout his career, he has advocated for a shift from segregated supports toward inclusive approaches that foster belonging, dignity, and meaningful participation in education and com- munity life.

Dr. Williamson’s research explores inclusive education practices, assistive technologies and cognitive prosthetics, international education policy, and pragmatic supports for children at the intersection of forced displacement and dis/ability. He is a co-founder of the REACH Partnership, an inter- national collaboration dedicated to improving educational and social supports for forcibly displaced and refugee students with complex learning paths. Above all, Dr. Williamson is committed to supporting children to reach their dreams, one learner at a time.
